My favorite part from the pages that I read was when Jeannette tried encouraging her mother to make changes. She told her that they can't go on living this way. She wanted her mom to get a job so that they could have more money and her mother didn't want to get a job. The most surprising part was she also asked her mother to leave her father because he was only making it worse and they would have more food if she did. This was surprising because Jeannette is usually very supportive of her father and her mother was shocked that Jeannette asked this.
