Having parents who care about them is important for a child.
Parents should love and support their children but they do not need to be
financially secure for their children to grow up to be healthy individuals. The
walls children were loved by their parents, but not always in the right ways,
they were also not supported all the time. This made life tough for them and
gave the Walls children a somewhat unhappy childhood.
Rex and Rose-Mary Walls loved their children, but they
didn't do a good job expressing it and were often cruel to their children. They
make many parenting mistakes and have wrong opinions, for example Rose-Mary believes
that "suffering when you’re young is good for you" (Walls 28). This
explains why she is so neglectful to her children, and doesn't take proper care
of them. This makes Jeannette feel neglected by both her parents because they
don't make enough effort to show their kids that they love them. She even asked
Rex, "Why don't you start acting like a dad?"(Walls 220). Neither of
her parents makes the effort to do what is necessary to support a family to
show their kids that they care. Rex doesn’t act like a dad because neither he
nor Rose-Mary takes on the responsibilities that every parent needs to take on
to be a good parent, and this shows their kids that they don’t love or care for
them.
The Walls are not supportive of their children, And this
gives the children a difficult childhood. Rex made their lives even more
difficult when he stole Money out of Jeannette's and Lori's piggy bank. When Jeannette
discovered this she "knew it was [her] dad, but at the same time couldn't believe
he'd stoop this low"(Walls 228). This was a terrible and selfish thing for
a parent to do to a child. Doing this said a lot about Rex as a parent because
that money was meant to improve Jeannette's and Lori's future. If Rex had cared
about their future and wanted to support them so they could have a better life,
he wouldn't have taken the money for himself. A good parent should always put
their child before themself, and should show support and help them. Rex did the
opposite of this by stealing the money. Without supportive parents Jeannette
lost hope for her future. She wanted to "get out of Welch. The sooner the
better"(Walls 221). Her life in Welch was unhappy because her parents
didn't support her and the only way to have a better life was to be away from
her parents who were only making her life worse.
Without the proper care from her parents, Jeannette didn't
have a very good childhood. It doesn't matter if parents are financially
secure, but they need to show the proper amount of love and support for their
children to be healthy individuals. All children need to know that they are
loved and supported, or, like Jeannette, they will feel neglected and have an
un happy childhood.
